Chatham County High School Yearbooks
High school yearbooks preserve an aspect of the past not found elsewhere, reflecting the perspectives and aspirations of different generations, and can also be very helpful tools for family research. They provide detail that is not available in other record types and help to place people in historical context. CCHA and the Chatham County Public Libraries have collaborated to make Chatham County yearbooks accessible. All three Chatham libraries have yearbook collections, and many of the older yearbooks are also available online.
The yearbooks in the library collections that were published at least 50 years ago have been digitized by the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center and are available online. The digitized yearbooks can be searched by county and school on the DigitalNC site. Chatham County’s digital collection currently contains issues from:
Additional volumes will be added to the digital collection as they are donated to the libraries and/or “age in” to meet the 50-year-or-older standard for inclusion. How You Can Help Do you have a yearbook from a Chatham County school gathering dust or packed away somewhere? Consider sharing it with others by making it a part of the collection at one of Chatham County’s libraries. Library staff and the Chatham County Historical Association are collaborating to build the collection—and they are asking for help. If you have Chatham County school yearbooks that you are willing to donate, please bring them to the Chatham Community Library reference desk, the circulation desks at Wren Memorial Library or Goldston Library, or to the Chatham Historical Museum during museum hours (Wed-Fri 11-4). Help us fill gaps and bring the collections up-to-date. Duplicate copies are welcome and will be used to fill out the collections at all three branches or put to good use as backup copies.
