Preserving and sharing the history of Chatham County North Carolina
Nathanael Greene, Charles Cornwallis, and the Race to the Dan The Race to the Dan was one of the most dramatic campaigns of the American Revolution, yet this important period of North Carolina history remains little known today. In this presentation, author Andrew Waters draws on his background in land conservation to explain the actions of the Race to the Dan's two main protagonists, Nathanael Greene and Charles Cornwallis, from a resilience theory perspective. Andrew Waters is a writer, editor, and conservationist residing in Pittsboro, North Carolina. He is the author of To the End of the World: Nathanael Greene, Charles Cornwallis, and the Race to the Dan (Westholme Publishing 2020), the 2021 runner up of the Fraunces Tavern Book Award for best book on the American Revolution and colonial period. He is also the author Backcountry War: The Rise of Francis Marion, Banastre Tarleton, and Thomas Sumter (Westholme Publishing 2024), The Quaker and the Gamecock: Nathanael Greene, Thomas Sumter, and the Revolutionary War for the Soul of the South (Casemate Publishers, September 2019) and the editor of Battle of Cowpens: Contemporary & Primary Accounts (Regiment Press, June 2019).
