Preservation Referrals and Advice
The CCHA website is a source of information for inquirers about structures listed on the National Register in Chatham County and those included in our architectural surveys. People who wish to place their houses on the National Register or to receive tax credits for restoration projects should contact the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). A map showing SHPO contacts for various regions provides contact information for Chatham County. The SHPO provides a document on Practical Advice for Preparing National Register Documents in North Carolina. We also refer interested persons to Preservation North Carolina, which is fondly referred to as an animal shelter for old houses (as well as schools, businesses, mills, etc.). Preservation North Carolina is North Carolina’s only private nonprofit statewide historic preservation organization. Its mission is to protect and promote buildings, landscapes and sites important to the diverse heritage of North Carolina. Through its award-winning Endangered Properties Program, Preservation North Carolina acquires endangered historic properties and then finds purchasers willing and able to rehabilitate them. Preservation North Carolina has been involved in saving several Chatham properties—including the three historic houses on Small Street and the Griffin-White house moved from Chatham Park property. CCHA volunteers also work with the Chatham County, Pittsboro, and Siler City planning departments to make developers aware of existing regulations regarding cemeteries and historic structures and to encourage them to recognize the value of Chatham’s historic features. See our History in the Path of Growth section for more information on this effort. For help with inquiries not covered by the links provided here, contact Preservation@chathamhistory.org.
